The name 'Bathou' in boro signifies five principles. They are : air, fire, earth, water and ether. These five principles were created by an omniscient figure, Bathoubwrai meaning, the chief deity.  The worship of 'Bathou' constitutes sacrifices and offerings of animals and it is basically performed in 'Sijousali'. Bodo culture following this traditional practice usually plant a Sijou shrub at the courtyard facing towards the northeast corner which is popularly known as 'Sijousali'. In the Bodo tribe, the Bathou mandir or temple is not only paying offerings to Bathoubwrai, who is known to be the supreme deity of this religion but also to our God-father Upendra Nath Brahma who is known as 'Bodofa' or 'the father of Bodos'.
