Traditional Knowledge:

The Bodo weavers used throw shuttle and fly shuttle looms. The working of both the loom is quite similar but the fly shuttle loom is much improved than throw shuttle loom and hence increases the inputs of the weavers. The shuttle makhu is thrown across the shed by the hand. The loom is fitted to a vertical post made of bamboo or wood and it is fixed to the ground. The shedding is worked off by a pair of healds gaorkha operated by a foot. The beating off of the weft is done by a reed rashw made of bamboo to sleigh tath. The various parts of the looms are-

Sleigh or Slay (tath)- A wooden frame accommodating the shuttle box, reed and it swings backward and forward with the help of a hand. In its forward motion the weft is beaten twice.

Shuttle box- It is a wooden cage for the shuttle with the spindle and plicker. The shuttle box is grooved inside lengthwise to accommodate the picker. The shuttle rest inside the box for the intermediate period between two successive picks.

Shuttle (makhu)- It is made of wood and placed vertically to the weft and passes through it during the process of weaving. The shuttle contains the spindle on which weft yarn is wound. During the stationary position of the loom, the shuttle remains in the shuttle box.

Picker - It is a piece of leather placed on the grooves inside the shuttle box where the spindle is kept. It helps in throwing the shuttle across the wrap by blowing it from one shuttle box to another.

Reed (rasw)- The reed is like the finest comb that the wrap passes through.

Heddle (nwh) - The heddle consists of a twin loops help in forming a shed.

Treadle- The treadle is a pedal with which the heddle is connected by means of a card. It is made of bamboo and operated with a foot.

Wrap beam (gandwi)- The roller on which wrap yarn is wound and it is fitted on the back of the loom

Fabric beam- These beam is fitted towards the front of the loom on which the weave fabric is wound.
