After choosing a clean spot the fully dried slices of banana rhizomes and pseudostem are burnt into ashes. The ashes are collected and stored in a place wrapped with dry banana leaves, the dried banana leaf maintains the humidity of the stored vessels. It is also stored by making small cake shapes which are dried in the sun. In the preparation to get the खारै (alkali) the खारै सथा is kept in a clean vessel or sometimes in the coconut shell, the filter paper/sheet mainly used in the process is made from a coconut leaf sheath. Clean water is poured in the खारै सथा and liquid is extracted from it which is called खारै.
